In the age of high protein recipes, it seems that cottage cheese has become the new 'cauliflower' of health foods. In the past year I have seen it blended, whipped, and baked into recipes I would have NEVER dreamed of using it in. And I can't say I blame them... as a registered dietitian it's safe to say I have fallen in LOVE with cottage cheese.
I was going through my recipes the other day and realized just how many recipes with cottage cheese I've created. It's truly one of my favorite secret ingredients. Despite the 23 recipes I currently have, I'm still constantly being asked to create MORE high protein cottage cheese recipes.

As a dietitian I am always looking for easy options to help people increase their protein intake. Protein is a macronutrient that is responsible for helping us feel full and satisfied throughout the day. Consuming higher protein foods such as cottage cheese is a great way to help balance blood sugar levels, aid in weight management and create more filling meals.
Versatility
Not only is it packed with protein and lower in fat than many other dairy options, it's also incredibly versatile. Due to it's mild flavor it can be used in both sweet and savory recipes! I love blending it and adding it into dips, smoothies and even baked goods! Cottage cheese can be a great higher protein option to replace sour cream, ricotta cheese or mayonnaise in recipes.
Rich in Essential Nutrients
In addition to it's high protein content it also offers lesser known benefits including being rich in essential nutrients like bone strengthening calcium, phosphorous, magnesium and minerals essential for overall health and energy levels such as riboflavin an vitamin B12.
Cottage cheese is considered a high sodium food which is definitely something to note. The salt in cottage cheese is essential to enhance the flavor and the texture of the cheese curds while also acting as a preservative making it difficult to find lower sodium variations.
To help avoid too much added sodium I always recommend looking for a 'no sodium added/ no salt added' option if you can. However, like anything cottage cheese can absolutely be included as part of a healthy diet in moderate amounts, just be mindful of your overall sodium intake!
