Indulge in this healthy Chocolate Greek Yogurt, delicious as a fruit dip or eaten on a spoon. 10g of protein and amazing for balanced snacks!

Bowl of chocolate Greek yogurt fruit dip with chocolate chips.

Greek yogurt and chocolate is actually an incredible combo. I've been eating my chocolate magic shell yogurt bowl on repeat, so you can think of this recipe as the yogurt fruit dip version. But honestly, I won't blame you if you just eat this straight with a spoon.

I created this recipe because I love pairing strawberries and other fruits with a chocolate dip. But building balanced snacks is important to me, so I wanted to create a higher protein dip that still tasted good. And this chocolate Greek yogurt fruit dip does just that.

It's the creamy fruit dip of your dreams, halfway between chocolate frosting and my peanut butter yogurt dip. Add it to a dessert board, pair with fruit, or enjoy it at breakfast!

Why This Recipe Is Dietitian Approved

    1. Satisfy that sweet tooth. I understand the need for a sweet treat, especially during the afternoon. This chocolate Greek yogurt has the right amount of sweetness to hit that spot, without being too much.
    2. Higher in protein. This fruit dip is a great high protein vegetarian snack option! It can be paired with fruit, graham crackers or eaten as is.
    3. Lower sugar option. We're using plain Greek yogurt so the sweetness level can be customized according to your tastes. I used just 2 tablespoon of maple syrup and found that it was sweet enough for me.

    Ingredients

Ingredients including plain Greek yogurt, chocolate chips, cocoa powder, vanilla, maple syrup and peanut butter.

Greek yogurt. I use 2% plain Greek yogurt as the base of this recipe; this makes it easier to customize how sweet I want to make it. A lower fat yogurt will result in a slightly less creamy, thinner dip while a higher fat content will result in a thicker, creamier dip! The choice is yours. This dip is great for meal prep and can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days!

Cocoa powder. Use a high quality cocoa powder for best results! My personal favourite is this one.

Maple syrup. For a touch of natural sweetness! Honey works too.

Vanilla extract. For added flavour. As we are not cooking this recipe, I recommend using a pure, natural vanilla extract.

Peanut butter. This helps create a thicker dip with a texture mimicking frosting. It also adds a subtle peanut flavour and some added healthy fats! If you don't like peanut butter or are allergic, feel free to leave it out.

The complete ingredient list with measurements can be found in the recipe card below.

    Instructions

Adding greek yogurt, cocoa powder, maple syrup, vanilla extract and peanut butter to a bowl.

In a medium bowl, mix together Greek yogurt, cocoa powder, maple syrup, vanilla extract and peanut butter (if using).

Mixing chocolate Greek yogurt with a spoon.

Top with chocolate chips and serve with your favourite fruit (or eat with a spoon)!

    Substitutions and Variations

To make gluten-free: This recipe is naturally gluten-free.

To make dairy-free/vegan: If you are looking for a dairy-free yogurt, I recommend the Silk non-dairy Greek yogurt for a thick base. Always ensure your chocolate is dairy-free too.

To make nut-free: The peanut butter can easily be omitted from this recipe. Note that this will result in a slightly thinner dip. Sunflower seed butter or another seed butter may also work.

For a higher protein option, you can replace the cocoa powder with 2 tablespoon of chocolate protein powder of choice. My favourite is Nuzest (if you want to try it, I have a code: NOURISHEDBYNIC).

For a crunch, top with added chopped peanuts for a true chocolate-peanut butter dip.

    Storage

    Top Tips for Success

This dip is great because you can customize the tastes to your personal preference. By using the plain Greek yogurt, this allows you to adjust the sweetness by adding less more more maple syrup!

To bring out the chocolate flavour, you can add a dash of salt or instant coffee powder.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What can I pair with this dip?

Fruit (I love berries, apples, orange slices), graham crackers, and pretzels all taste amazing with this dip. I also love adding chocolate Greek yogurt on pancakes, waffles and toast.

    Is this dip healthy?

Yes! This dip is a minimal-ingredient option that contains protein, fat and even a little fiber. It's perfect to pair for a balanced snack.

Do I have to use Greek yogurt?

Yes you can, however Greek yogurt is very thick and results in a more traditional dip or pudding-like consistency. If you choose to use a different style of yogurt, this may alter the texture slightly.

Can I use a vanilla yogurt?

Vanilla yogurt can be used, however I recommend decreasing the maple syrup as vanilla yogurt is pre-sweetened.

We ate it on German pancakes and enjoyed it. I added about 1 more Tbsp maple syrup because it was slightly bitter. Maybe using less cocoa powder would have worked, too.
