Double Chocolate Frozen Yogurt Bites are a delicious sweet treat that are low sugar and a source of protein, calcium and healthy fats!

Meal prepping is kind of my middle name, and that includes dessert too. As a dietitian, I believe that all foods fit in a balanced diet and I love the occasional sweet treat. The double chocolate butter frozen yogurt bites are my new obsession, because you can keep them on hand in the freezer for whenever the sweet tooth hits.

I honestly think they're perfect for summer, because it tastes like peanut butter chocolate froyo in a bite, covered with chocolate magic shell. These frozen yogurt bites are great for when you just need a little something sweet after dinner, and they always hit the spot. If you enjoyed my cheesecake frozen yogurt bark, I know you'll love this recipe too.

Why This Recipe Is Dietitian Approved

    1. Easy sweet treat. These frozen yogurt bites only use 6 ingredients and 10 minutes of prep.
    2. Low added sugar. We use just a touch of honey to sweet the base of these frozen yogurt bites, making them a lower sugar dessert.
    3. Source of calcium. The Greek yogurt is a rich source of calcium that supports bone health.

    Ingredients

Ingredients including peanut butter, greek yogurt, honey, peanuts, chocolate chips, vanilla and chopped peanuts.

Yogurt. Full fat yogurt works best in recipes where you are freezing it. The fat helps create a smoother, creamier consistency similar to ice cream, and decreases that hard icy consistency we want to avoid. Greek yogurt or regular yogurt both work, just look for a higher fat content.

Peanut butter. Chocolate and peanut butter are truly the BEST combination with the richness, nuttiness and sweetness (but not too sweet!). The peanut butter also helps add some protein, healthy fats, and a little fibre.

Cocoa powder. To add a rich, chocolatey flavour! I recommend using a high quality cocoa powder such as Ghiradelli for the best flavour. You can also use chocolate protein powder if you prefer.

    Honey. For a little sweetness!

Vanilla extract. Vanilla helps add flavour.

Chocolate chips. For our chocolate topping. I typically use semi-sweet chocolate chips, however you can use milk chocolate, white chocolate or dark chocolate.

Coconut oil. This helps melt the chocolate and creates a crisp chocolate magic shell.

    Peanuts. For topping and crunch.

Salt. I love adding a pinch of sea salt whenever I'm working with a chocolate flavoured item to bring out the rich flavours of the chocolate.

The complete ingredient list with measurements can be found in the recipe card below.

    Instructions

Mixing yogurt, peanut butter, honey, vanilla extract, salt and cocoa powder.
    1. In a medium icing bowl, mix together yogurt, peanut butter, honey, vanilla extract, salt and cocoa powder.
Filling an ice cube tray with peanut butter yogurt mixture.
    1. Divide the yogurt mixture amongst the cavities or a silicone chocolate mold until the cavities are about ¾ full (for the mold I used I added about 1 tablespoon to each cavity).
Melting chocolate chips and coconut oil.
    1. Melt the chocolate chips by adding them to a microwave safe bowl along with the coconut oil. Microwave in 30 second increments, stirring between until fully melted (about 1 minute 30 seconds).

    1. Cover the top of the yogurt with a layer of chocolate.
    2. Top with chopped peanuts and additional sea salt if desired. Freeze until completely frozen. Enjoy straight out of the freezer!

    Substitutions and Variations

To make gluten-free: this recipe is naturally gluten-free.

To make dairy-free: I have not tested this recipe with plant-based yogurt but if you do, choose a thicker, full fat one.

To make nut-free: unfortunately I don't have a nut-free version of this recipe.

These frozen yogurt bites are easily customizable to your taste preferences. If you want more of a traditional Reese's style frozen yogurt cup, omit the cocoa powder from the base and keep it solely peanut butter focused.

For a fruity twist, replace the chopped peanuts with diced dried strawberries.

For a higher protein variation, substitute the regular yogurt with greek yogurt (look for a full fat variation) and replace the cocoa powder with chocolate protein powder.

    Equipment

    • Mold
    • Mixing bowl

    Storage

These frozen yogurt bites can be stored in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 3 months. I recommend grabbing one straight out of the freezer for best results.

    Top Tips for Success

I highly recommend using a full fat yogurt variation. The fat is a key component  in creating a creamier, ice-cream like consistency. Using a lower fat content yogurt will result in an icy consistency that is harder to bite.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can I add protein powder to this recipe?

Yes you absolutely can! The cocoa powder can be replaced with chocolate protein powder if you prefer, or you can add an additional 2 tablespoon of protein powder of your choice to the recipe as written.

Can I keep these in the fridge?

I recommend storing these frozen yogurt bites in the freezer to avoid them melting.

    Double Chocolate Frozen Yogurt Bites

Double Chocolate Frozen Yogurt Bites are a delicious sweet treat that are low sugar and a source of protein, calcium and healthy fats!
    Prep Time10 minutes mins
    Cook Time3 hours hrs
    Course: Dessert, Snack
    Cuisine: American
    Keyword: freezer
    Servings: 30 bites

    Ingredients

    • 1 +¼ cup plain full fat yogurt both plain yogurt and greek yogurt will work
    • ½ cup + 2 tablespoon natural peanut butter it should be runny!
    • 3 tablespoon honey
    • 1.5 teaspoon vanilla extract
    • 2.5 tablespoon cocoa powder
    • Pinch of sea salt
    • ¾ cup chocolate chips
    • 1 teaspoon coconut oil
    • ¼ cup peanuts chopped

    Instructions

    • In a medium icing bowl, mix together yogurt, peanut butter, honey, vanilla extract, salt and cocoa powder.
    • Divide the yogurt mixture amongst the cavities or a silicone chocolate mold until the cavities are about ¾ full (for the mold I used I added about 1 tablespoon to each cavity).
    • Melt the chocolate chips by adding them to a microwave safe bowl along with the coconut oil. Microwave in 30 second increments, stirring between until fully melted (about 1 minute 30 seconds).
    • Cover the top of the yogurt with a layer of chocolate.
    • Top with chopped peanuts and additional sea salt if desired. Freeze until completely frozen. Enjoy straight out of the freezer!

    Notes

For a higher protein option: substitute the regular yogurt with plain greek yogurt and replace the cocoa powder with chocolate protein powder.
If your peanut butter is not runny enough, pop it in the microwave for about 30 seconds before adding.
The mold I used was quite small. If you prefer to use a larger silicone mold such as the one I used for my egg bites you absolutely can.
