Homemade herb and cheddar Greek yogurt protein bagels with 12g of protein! No yeast, no rise time, easy to make, and so delicious.

Stack of herb and cheddar greek yogurt bagels.

When I first posted these bagels about a year ago, people went CRAZY for them. Everyone I made them for instantly became obsessed. I don't blame them though- these are out of this world good. They literally taste exactly like your favourite bakery bagels except you can make them in the comfort of your own home. That means that you can have homemade bagels every single day. Who wouldn't want that?

    What is 3-Ingredient Dough?

Spreading cream cheese on herb and cheddar bagels.

3-ingredient yogurt dough is my absolute favourite. It's probably one of the most versatile doughs I have ever worked with. It's so easy to make and can be made with literally only three ingredients. All you need is a thick yogurt (think Greek yogurt), all-purpose flour and baking powder. The dough puffs up perfectly, requires 0 yeast and needs no time to rise. It makes all the recipes you thought were hard SO simple. So here is your chance to impress your loved ones with homemade bagels.

PS. If you haven't tried my cinnamon buns yet, here is your reminder. They make the process of making homemade cinnamon buns SO easy, you'll be able to have them every single morning with minimal ingredients, minimal time and ALL the flavour.

    Ingredients

    Ingredients for greek yogurt bagels.
    • All-purpose flour
    • Baking powder
    • Greek yogurt
    • Oregano, salt, garlic powder and red pepper flakes
    • Cheddar cheese
    • Egg

    Instructions

Mixing spices and baking powder with flour.

    Preheat oven to 350 F. I

n a large bowl, mix flour with baking powder, salt and spices

    Mixing greek yogurt with flour.

In the same bowl, add yogurt and knead dough to mix until flour is fully combined.

    Cutting dough into individual portions.

On a lightly floured surface, roll and knead the dough into one smooth ball and divide dough into 4-5 equal pieces (these will be your bagels).

    Shaping bagels on a tray.

To shape the bagels, roll out each piece of dough into a log, joining the two ends together to form a circle.

Brushing egg wash on greek yogurt bagels.

Place bagels on a parchment- lined baking sheet. Brush each bagel with egg wash and sprinkle with cheese.

Topping greek yogurt bagels with cheddar cheese and baking.

Bake bagels for 25 minutes, or until tops are slightly golden. Allow to cool for at least 15 minutes before slicing and serving.

    Substitutions and Variations

    To make gluten-free: Use 1-to-1 gluten-free all-purpose flour. I like this one.

To make dairy-free: I recommend sticking with Greek yogurt for best results, however if you find a thicker dairy-free alternative that may work!

Once you have the 3-ingredient dough, you can play around with the toppings and spices as much as you desire. For those of you who like some spice, topping your bagels with diced jalapenos is an amazing addition! You can also try mixing shredded cheese into the dough for extra cheesy bites.

If you're not a fan of herb and cheddar, no worries! Grab your favourite everything bagel seasoning or some sesame seeds instead.

    Equipment

    • Mixing bowl
    • Baking sheet

    Storage

These Greek yogurt bagels can be stored on the counter in a sealed container for up to 2 days or in the freezer for up to 2 months.

    Top Tip

Use your hands to knead the dough! I find it takes a little extra effort to make sure all the flour and yogurt is thoroughly mixed, so using your hands helps speed up the process.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is 1 tablespoon of baking powder correct?

Yes, one TABLESPOON of baking powder is correct. Instead of using yeast, we add baking powder to all purpose flour, creating a self rising flour that makes the fluffiest bagels. If you want less fluffy bagels, feel free to halve the baking powder.

My bagels didn’t rise. What did I do wrong?

My biggest tip is to make sure you are using a baking powder that has not expired (yes, baking powder can expire). So check the date before using, and store your baking powder in a tightly sealed container. I also have not tested any other flour options other than those mentioned so if you used a different flour this might be why!

What can I top my bagels with?

So many good options! You can do a pizza bagel with tomato sauce, cheese and toppings, or go for a classic lox with cream cheese. These bagels are also AMAZING in a sandwich- I love it with some chicken salad.

Do I have to add the egg wash?

No, you do not! I find it helps the tops of the bagel brown creating the perfect bakery-style bagel, however you can easily skip it!

This is my favorite find in such a long time (with the sheet pan eggs ❤️). However, I wanted a little sweet as October rolled in and I mixed in a little maple syrup and pumpkin pie spice in the batter and they were phenomenal. I might have a little Truvia brown sugar and cinnamon over the top, too…I love all your recipes but this is a top one for sure. Thank you!

Can you make it with whole wheat flour? If so, is it the same amount?

A delicious recipe. I did reduce the herbs, bc I’m not a huge dried herb person. I will be making these again.
