All you need is 11 minutes and 2 easy ingredients to make homemade Air Fryer Pita Chips. Perfectly crispy and lower in oil and salt they're the perfect healthy option to pair with your favourite dip.

It's no secret I love a good snack. Especially when it's a healthy and balanced snack pairing. Pita chips have always been one of my favourite crunchy snack to use as a vessel for all of my high protein dips. So when I decided to try making an air fryer pita chip I knew it would quickly become my new go-to snack.
Not only are these a great option to help save you money in the grocery store, but they are incredibly simple to make and made with less oil and salt than a store-bought version. Plus, if you decide to use a whole wheat pita you can also add some additional fiber into your diet!
These air fryer pita chips are quickly going to become a new staple recipe in your house- perfect to pair with all your favorite dips!
Why This Recipe Is Dietitian Approved
- High fibre snack. Most pita chips aren't super high in fibre, but we can make this homemade version higher in fibre by using a whole wheat tortilla.
- 2 ingredients. I love a minimal ingredient recipe. You only really need 2 main ingredients ot make these pita chips: pita bread and oil! After that, the seasoning blend is yours to customize based on what you have available.
- Healthier than storebought. Many pita chips are deep fried and high in salt. By making them homemade and in the air fryer, we're able to cut back on some salt and fat while still getting a tasty snack.
Ingredients
- Pita- Look for a double layer Lebanese pita bread if it is available to you. I find it thinner and easier to crisp up! I love opting for a whole wheat pita variation to help boost the fiber content of these pita chips! Thicker, Greek pita bread will work it will jsut increase the cook time to about 10 minutes.
- Olive Oil- a little oil goes a long way! Not only are we significantly reducing the amount of oil than the amount in a traditional store-bought version, we are also opting to use olive oil which is a monounsaturated fat (otherwise known as a healthy fat)!
- Spices- This is where you can customize the air fryer pita chips to your desired preference! My go-to spices for a classic garlic pita chip are: salt, black pepper, garlic powder, dried parsley and red pepper flakes.
The complete ingredient list with measurements can be found in the recipe card below.
Instructions
Preheat the air fryer to 325℉.
In a small bowl, mix together olive oil, salt, pepper, garlic powder, parsley and red pepper flakes. Brush each side of the pita in a thin layer of the oil mixture.
Slice each pita into about 8 triangles using a sharp knife or a pizza cutter. I like to start by slicing the pita in quarters, and then slicing each quarter in half.
Arrange pita triangles in a single layer in the basket of your air fryer (it’s ok if they are overlapping slightly). I recommend doing this in about 2-3 batches depending on your air fryer size. Bake for about 6-8 minutes or until golden brown (note they may not be perfectly crispy right away).
Allow to cool. This is when the pita chips crisp to create a traditional chip texture. Once cool pita chips can be stored in an airtight container or bag on the counter or in the fridge for up to 5 days.
Substitutions and Variations
To make gluten-free: Use a gluten-free pita of choice.
To make dairy-free/vegan: This recipe is naturally dairy-free and vegan.
To make nut-free: This recipe is naturally nut-free.
The best part about making your own homemade air fryer pita chips is the spice options are endless!
- If you would like a sweet option you can substitute the spices for 1 teaspoon cinnamon and 2 teaspoon of brown sugar
- For a spicier option- add about ½ teaspoon of chili powder into the spice blend
- For a cheesy option- add 1 tablespoon of Parmesan cheese ½ way through baking
If you have a Trader Joe's near you, any of their pre-made spice blends would be a fun addition to these chips. I personally love the Aglio Olio seasoning!

Storage
These air fryer pita chips are great to make ahead of time. You can store them in the fridge or on the counter for up to 5 days in an airtight container.
Top Tips for Success
Do not overcrowd the air fryer! Your pita chips will have the best chance at getting nice and evenly cooked and crispy if they have enough room to to evenly cook. You may need to bake these in batches (but as the cook time is only about 6 minutes it won’t add too much extra time).
I also note in the recipe card that all air fryers do cook slightly differently, to avoid burning your pita chips I recommend to start watching them at about 5 minutes.
Frequently Asked Questions
You can, but I wouldn't recommend it. The oil is what helps the seasonings stick to the pita and allows them to crisp up creating a chip texture. Don't be afraid of oil, olive oil can be a great addition to a balanced diet and little goes a long way!

I have a Cosori Pro II 5.8 qt. air fryer. The setting for temperature only does 230, not 235, but I still used the 5-minute bake time suggestion ( baked 7-8 triangles per batch), and I’m so glad I did because when I used another recipe recently, I messed up with the temperature and they were pretty overdone. The pita chips were just a tiny bit still “bread-like” so I flipped them over with tongs and baked one more minute. They turned out perfectly crispy. I omitted the red pepper flakes as we can’t eat spicy foods any longer. They turned out very delicious anyway, and so good with my homemade hummus dip.

These are awesome! I made the mistake of not baking them enough (I took them out before they were golden brown), but they were still great. Better than store bought pita chips, and I can't explain why! So easy, I will definitely be making again.
