Homemade Air Fryer Tortilla Chips are easy and lower in oil and salt compared to storebought. They crisp up in just a couple minutes and can be stored for snacking.

Bowl of air fryer tortilla chips, served with dip and salsa.

I love a salty snack, especially when it can be paired with one of my cottage cheese dips for a lasting boost of energy. Chips and crackers from the store are great, but I love making these homemade air fryer tortilla chips.

Not only are these cheaper than store-bought, but you can make them any flavour you desire (and with less oil and salt). Plus, after a couple minutes in the air fryer, they get the perfect crisp for dunking in salsa.

Once you start making these, there's no going back. It's one of the easiest salty snacks to make from home, and you only need a handful of ingredients.

Why This Recipe Is Dietitian Approved

    1. High fibre snack. Most tortilla chips aren't super high in fibre, but we can make this homemade version higher in fibre by using a whole wheat tortilla.
    2. 2 ingredients. There's only 2 main ingredients: oil and tortilla! After that, the seasoning blend is totally up to you.
    3. Healthier than storebought. Many tortilla chips are deep fried and high in salt. By making them homemade and in the air fryer, we're able to cut back on some salt and fat while still getting a tasty snack.

    Ingredients

Ingredients including whole wheat tortillas and olive oil.

Tortillas. I use 10 inch whole wheat tortillas, but you can make these tortilla chips with any size or type of tortilla (even gluten-free).

Olive oil. This helps create the perfect crispy tortilla chips. It also helps our seasonings stick to the chips. You can use any neutral tasting oil of choice if you do not have olive oil (ie. avocado oil, canola oil etc.). Don't skip the oil- a little goes a long way!

Seasonings. This is where you can go wild. I have three flavour options that I list below and in the recipe card.

The complete ingredient list with measurements can be found in the recipe card below.

    Instructions

Preheat the air fryer to 350 F.

In a small bowl, mix together olive oil and seasonings of choice. Brush each side of the tortilla in a thin layer of the oil mixture.

Slicing tortilla into triangular chip shapes.

Slice each tortilla into about 12 triangles using a sharp knife or a pizza cutter. I like to start by slicing the tortilla in quarters, and then slicing each quarter into about 3 triangles. The chips may not be equal sizes and that is okay.

Placing tortilla chips in the air fryer.

Arrange tortilla triangles in a single layer in the basket of your air fryer (it’s ok if they are overlapping slightly). I recommend doing this in about 2-3 batches depending on your air fryer size. Bake for about 5-7 minutes or until golden brown (note they may not be perfectly crispy right away).

Allow to cool. This is when the tortilla crisps to create a traditional chip texture. Once cool tortilla chips can be stored in an airtight container or bag on the counter or in the fridge for up to 5 days.

    Substitutions and Variations

To make gluten-free: Use a gluten-free tortilla of choice.

To make dairy-free/vegan: This recipe is naturally dairy-free and vegan.

To make nut-free: This recipe is naturally nut-free.

What I love most about these homemade tortilla chips is how can be customized to ANY flavour you enjoy! I’ve provided three of my favourite variations below, but some other great options include:

    • Cool ranch: about 1 tablespoon of ranch seasoning
    • Spicy: add 1 teaspoon of chili powder, ⅛ teaspoon cumin and ¼ teaspoon paprika
    • Greek: ½ teaspoon oregano, ¼ teaspoon garlic powder, ⅛ teaspoon onion powder

If you have a Trader Joe's near you, any of their pre-made spice blends would be a fun addition to these chips.

    Equipment

    • Air fryer

    Storage

These air fryer tortilla chips are great to make ahead of time. You can store them in the fridge or on the counter for up to 5 days in an airtight container.

    Top Tips for Success

Do not overcrowd the air fryer! Your tortillas will have the best chance at getting nice and evenly cooked and crispy if they have enough room to heat. You may need to bake these in batches (but the cook time is only about 5 minutes so it won’t be too much extra time).

    Frequently Asked Questions

What do you eat with these tortilla chips?

I love a good dip! Some of my favourites are spinach cottage cheese dip, Greek yogurt buffalo chicken dip and guacamole.

Can you make these chips without oil?

You can, but I wouldn't recommend it. They're more likely to burn and the seasoning won't stick well. Don't be afraid of oil, a little goes a long way!
