Enjoy an alcohol-free summer drink with my healthy pina colada mocktail. It's lower in sugar and packed with vitamin C, electrolytes and enzymes to aid digestion and keep you hydrated.

Healthy pina colada mocktail wiht a slice of pineapple and toasted coconut rim.

Summer pool days aren't complete without a fun bevvy in my hand! Whenever I'm on vacation you can almost always find me by the pool with a book and pina colada by my side.

With that being said, I do try to consume alcohol in moderation as it doesn't make me feel the best long-term. This pina colada mocktail is something I love making more often in my day-to-day, so I can still feel refreshed and in summer mode without the alcohol.

It's got all the cooling flavours of a traditional pina colada and won't disappoint!

Why This Dietitian Loves This Recipe

This pina colada mocktail is the drink of the summer and here's why:

    1. Non-alcoholic. Whether you're underage, avoiding alcohol or just looking to cut back your intake, this pina colada mocktail is a great way to experience a classic summer cocktail without the booze.
    2. Lower sugar. It's a pina colada, but with less of a sugar buzz. I've even included an option that's completely free of added sugar, if that's your thing.
    3. Electrolytes to aid hydration. Sweating in the heat for hours can seriously deplete your electrolytes, and this mocktail has essential electrolytes like potassium to help with hydration. If you want to add sodium for more electrolytes, you can add a pinch of salt.
    4. Enzymes to aid digestion. Pineapple contains enzymes called bromelain that can help break down proteins and support your digestion.

    Ingredients

Ingredients for pina colada mocktail including pineapple, lime, coconut milk and coconut shreds.

    For garnish:

    • Unsweetened shredded coconut
    • Lime wedges
    • Pineapple

    For Pina colada:

    • Light coconut milk
    • Lime juice
    • Frozen pineapple
    • Ice
    • Non-alcoholic rum
    • Honey

    Instructions

Toasted coconut shreds on a plate.

Spread coconut in an even layer on a baking tray and broil at 500F for about 4 minutes, or until golden brown and add to a small shallow plate.

Cocktail glass with toasted coconut rim.

Use a wedge of fresh lime juice and run it around the rim of each glass to moisten it.

Dip the wet edge of the cocktail glass into the plate of coconut.

    Blending frozen pineapple and ice.

In a large blender combine all ingredients. Blend until smooth.

    Two pina colada mocktails.

    Pour into 2 garnished glasses.

    Substitutions and Variations

To make gluten-free: This recipe is naturally gluten-free.

To make vegan: Swap the honey for maple syrup or leave it out.

To make dairy-free: This recipe is naturally dairy-free.

To make nut-free: This recipe is naturally nut-free.

    Equipment

    • Baking tray
    • Blender

    Storage

I recommend consuming these pina colada mocktails right after being made. If you have leftovers, they can be stored in the fridge however please note the mixture will begin to separate over time so it will need to be shaken or blended prior to serving.

    Top Tips for Success

    • Add liquid first! I recommend adding liquid to the blender before adding pineapple and ice! This will help the blender run smoothly.
    • Your equipment matters! For best results, use a high powered blender. This will help break the ice into smaller chunks, creating a smoother pina colada.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to add non alcoholic rum?

No, you absolutely do not need to! Non-alcoholic rum will add a bit more of that classic pina colada flavour, however I personally like this mocktail as is! The pineapple and coconut create a creamy, sweet flavour that is perfect for summer.

    Is the honey necessary?

No! I like adding in some honey to break up the tartness of the pineapple, however if you find it sweet enough without it feel free to leave it out!

Can I add alcohol to this pina colada mocktail?

Yes, you can absolutely swap the non-alcoholic rum for alcoholic rum if that is what fits your lifestyle!

What's the difference between a cocktail and a mocktail?

    Mocktails don't contain alcohol!
