My Homemade Ginger Turmeric Shot recipe is a go-to for supporting immune health. Fresh and citrusy, you'll actually enjoy taking these shots!

The second flu season hits, I am always looking for ways to support my immunity. Covering your foundations of proper sleep, hygiene and eating well comes first, but I also love making this ginger turmeric shot recipe when I want to go the extra step.
Homemade ginger shots are easier than you'd think and much more affordable than buying them pre-made. All you need are a few key ingredients and a blender, and you're good to go! These ginger turmeric shots are also super delicious, made with lemon and orange for a fresh, citrusy hit.
This is a dietitian approved shot that will actually support your health and immunity 😉
Why This Recipe Is Dietitian Approved
- Anti-inflammatory. Ginger and turmeric have phytonutrients like gingerol and curcumin that can play a large role in managing inflammation from allergies, infections, and join disorders within the body.
- Vitamin C. Although vitamin C is not a cure for sickness, it plays a key role in immunity. The citrus fruits in this recipe are rich in vitamin C, to fight those free radicals and support your immune system.
- Easy. Homemade immunity shots take only 5 minutes to make and are way cheaper than buying them at a store or cafe.
Ingredients
Ginger. This is a phytonutrient-packed ingredient that helps support your immune system, reduce nausea and fight inflammation in the body! Fresh ginger is best for homemade ginger shots. I recommend cleaning your ginger by scrubbing the outside layer before dicing it up; you don't have to peel it. This provides the best flavour.
Turmeric. Our anti-inflammatory powerhouse ingredient! You may use fresh or dried turmeric, however I recommend fresh if it is available to you.
Lemon. For added vitamin c and flavour. I recommend using fresh lemons and juicing them yourself for the freshest lemon and ginger shots.
Orange. We use two whole naval oranges in this recipe. If you prefer a different type of orange, you can absolute substitute for your favourite. Fresh 100% orange juice will work as well (details in the recipe card below).
Black pepper. This improves the bioavailability of the curcumin in turmeric, allowing our body to better absorb and utilize it.
Olive oil. Likewise, fat helps our body more readily absorb the curcumin, ensuring we are able to take full advantage of the health benefits.
The complete ingredient list with measurements can be found in the recipe card below.
Instructions
- In a high powered blender, add lemon juice, water, olive oil. Add peeled oranges, chopped ginger, turmeric and black pepper. Blend until smooth.
- Through a mesh strainer or cheesecloth placed over a large bowl pour ginger mixture to remove any lumps.
- Pour the thin liquid into individual 2 oz glass jars or in one 12 oz mason jar and store in the fridge.
Substitutions and Variations
To make gluten-free: this recipe is naturally gluten-free.
To make dairy-free: this recipe is naturally dairy-free.
To make nut-free: this recipe is naturally nut-free.
Missing ingredients? Try this:
- Fresh turmeric: ¼ teaspoon dried turmeric powder
- 2 whole oranges: ½ cup 100% pure orange juice
I do not recommend substituting the fresh ginger with dried or jarred ginger. I have tested this recipe using these options and did not yield the same results.
Olive oil can be left out of this recipe, however fat sources play a key role in helping the body absorb the benefits of the turmeric, so I would recommend adding it. The same goes for black pepper, a critical ingredient to help absorb and activate the turmeric.
Equipment
- High-powered blender (I like my Vitamix or this bullet blender)
- 2 oz glass jars or one large 12 oz glass
Storage
These ginger shots can be stored in individual 2 oz glass jars or one large 12 oz glass jar in the fridge for up to 1 week. Before serving, I recommend shaking the jar to ensure the shots have not separated.
Ginger shots can also be added to silicone ice cube trays and frozen to be used in hot water as an immunity tea- perfect for cold and flu season!
Top Tips for Success
I recommend using a high powered blender for this recipe. I have tested this using my food processor, and it just doesn't create the same smooth consistency as a Vitamix or this bullet blender does.
For the best flavour, I REALLY recommend using fresh turmeric and fresh ginger. I have tested this recipe using the pre-grated jarred ginger and the flavour is much less potent and fresh.
Frequently Asked Questions
Great question! The phytonutrient turmeric, curcumin, is actually fat-soluble. This means that it is absorbed in your body by being first dissolved in fat. We add olive oil to these ginger turmeric shots because its a great source of healthy fats to help your body more readily absorb curcumin and reap its benefits.
Yes!! I love making a batch of these and keeping them in the fridge to easily have on hand during sick season.
You can! I love using silicone ice cube trays to freeze some of my ginger shots. When I crave a cozy warm drink in the fall and winter, I add a cube to some boiling water for a drink with benefits!

Homemade Lemon Ginger Turmeric Shot
Ingredients

- ¼ cup water
- 1 tablespoon olive oil optional, see below
- 2 navel oranges peeled
- ¼ cup fresh ginger washed and chopped, see below
- 1 teaspoon fresh turmeric or ¼ teaspoon dried
- ⅛ teaspoon black pepper
Instructions
- In a high powered blender, add lemon juice, water, olive oil. Add peeled oranges, chopped ginger, turmeric and black pepper. Blend until smooth.
