Perfect for the snowy weather, my oat milk hot chocolate decadent, creamy and warming. It's a great lower sugar option that's also gluten-free, vegan and uses pantry staples!

Oat milk hot chocolate in a mug with marshmallows

There's something about a special drink that makes it effortless to romanticize any situation. Even the gloomy, snowy weather in Ontario right now. While I love perusing the Starbucks holiday menu, sometimes my credit card thinks otherwise.

Especially in times like these (aka it being WAY too cold to leave the house), this oat milk hot chocolate comes in handy.

Not only is it a cost-effective way to satisfy that hot drink need (cheaper than store-bought packets too), it's dairy-free, vegan AND a lower sugar option so everyone can enjoy it together.

Cozy up on the couch with a steaming mug, a chai cookie, and a movie, and you're set for a Pinterest-worthy evening.

    Ingredients

Ingredients for hot chocolate including oat milk, cocoa powder, maple syrup and vanilla.

There's only 6 ingredients (5 if you dono't count the salt)!!

    • 2.5 cups of unsweetened oat milk  (625g)
    • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (4.2g)
    • 1 -2 tablespoon maple syrup (20-40g)
    •  2 tablespoon cocoa powder (14.5g)
    • ½  teaspoon cinnamon (1.5g)
    • pinch of sea salt
    • OPTIONAL: chocolate protein powder

    Instructions

Birds eye view of oat milk hot chocolate with marshmallows and cocoa powder.

Step One: Add all ingredients to a medium pot and whisk to combine

Step Two: Continue whisking periodically until the hot chocolate is steaming (don’t let it burn!)

Step Three: Pour into mugs and top with marshmallows (vegan if necessary), dairy-free whipped cream, and a light dusting of cocoa powder.

    Substitutions and Variations

This recipe is dairy-free, vegan and gluten-free, but use your milk of choice depending on preference. You can also swap the maple syrup for another liquid sweetener of choice, like honey, agave, or date syrup.

Another fun thing I like to do sometimes is play around with flavored hot chocolate! Here are some ideas:

    • Peppermint hot chocolate- stir in a candy cane or peppermint extract
    • Mexican hot chocolate- add a pinch of cayenne and some cinnamon
    • Peanut butter- stir in a spoonful of peanut butter until it melts
    • Extra chocolate-y- Add 2 tablespoon of chocolate chips into the pot and stir until melted

    Equipment

    • Whisk
    • Medium pot

    Storage

This oat milk hot chocolate is best enjoyed fresh.

    Top Tip

The key to success is to keep whisking. Sometimes the cocoa powder can be clumpy and won't incorporate as well, but this will resolve as long as you continually whisk.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can you make this oat milk hot chocolate in the microwave?

For best results I would recommend the stovetop, but you can definitely try it in the microwave! I would whisk all the ingredients first in a mug, then microwave in increments (whisking in between) until the drink is heated. Alternatively, you could use a handheld milk frother.

What can I top my hot chocolate with?

Sooo many good options! Whipped cream, dusting of cocoa powder, drizzle of chocolate sauce, chocolate chips- the list goes on.
