Lower in sugar and naturally sweetened, this Oreo protein shake, packed with ~20g of protein, is the most delicious way to satisfy a sweet craving.

Two Oreo protein shakes in tall glasses topped with whipped cream and cookie crumbs.

What's better than a cold, cookies and cream milkshake? Very little if you ask me.

In all seriousness though, this Oreo protein shake has quickly taken my house by storm. It makes for the best easy dessert, because it only takes 5 minutes to whip up.

It's also a great balanced option, meaning it keeps my body full and satisfied! Thanks to the protein, fibre and healthy fats (if you choose to use non-fat yogurt), you won't be hungry anytime soon.

But don't worry- this recipe is nutrient-dense, but sacrifices ZERO flavour and tastes exactly like a cookies and cream milkshake. It's like your classic diner drink, but made at home with ingredients you already have.

    Ingredients

    • Frozen bananas
    • Plain Greek yogurt
    • Milk of choice
    • Vanilla extract
    • Chocolate sandwich cookies (Oreos)
    • Chia seeds
    • Vanilla protein powder
    • Sweetener of choice (sugar, maple syrup or honey)

    Instructions

Birds eye view of two Oreo protein shakes.

Step One: Blend frozen banana, yogurt, milk, chia seeds, chocolate sandwich cookies, protein powder and sweetener (if using) to your blender and blend until smooth.

Step Two: Pour mixture into two glasses, garnish with whipped cream and additional cookie crumbs and serve.

    Substitutions and Variations

To make dairy-free: Use dairy-free milk, yogurt, sandwich cookies, and protein powder. Note that most dairy-free milk and yogurt options are lower in protein, so if that is important to you I'd recommend going for a pea or soy milk and a soy-based yogurt.

To make gluten-free: Use gluten-free sandwich cookies.

If you're into mint chip, this recipe adapts well if you add a couple drops of mint extract (or finely diced fresh mint).

    Equipment

    • Blender
    • Magic Bullet blender (personal sized)

    Storage

This milkshake is best enjoyed upon making.

    Top Tip

Whenever my bananas are beginning to brown, I like to slice them in quarters and freeze them. That way whenever I feel like a smoothie, I know 4 pieces = 1 whole banana. I also recommend freezing bananas in smaller pieces so they blend easier (important if you have a weaker blender!).

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use fruits other than banana?

In this case, I'd stick with the banana for best results. Since it's naturally sweet with a mild flavour, it really compliments cookies and cream.

What makes this shake high protein?

The Greek yogurt, milk and protein powder all add protein. Depending on the protein powder and milk you choose, one serving of this Oreo milkshake can have around 20g of protein!

Can I use sweetened Greek yogurt?

You can, but I'd opt for a vanilla or neutral-tasting option for the sake of our cookies and cream flavour. Using a sweetened Greek yogurt means you might be able to cut back on the extra sweetener depending on your taste preferences.

This was decent. I wish it would have tasted more like cookies and cream, but I still enjoyed it.

Hi Allie, if you are looking for a protein shake that tastes a bit more like cookies and cream I would recommend using a cookies and cream protein powder in place of the vanilla! You could also try experimenting with adding additional oreos in place of the banana! Without adding too much additional sugar it's a bit tricky to get the taste to be exactly like a traditional cookies and cream milkshake but hopefully you still enjoyed!
